10. Starship Troopers Long before gamers were giving their lives to spread democracy for Super Earth in Helldivers 2, the film that inspired it became a cult classic. Starship Troopers is a gung-ho, campy sci-fi war movie. It follows a group of eager young cadets as they graduate high school and enlist in the Mobile Infantry. While the movie is a blast of absurdity as this group of lovable young adults trains to fight alien bugs, Starship Troopers has a surprising amount to say.

First off, I don’t know that we should be surprised. Developer BioWare isn’t exactly your go-to company for challenging skill-based gameplay. They’re in the business of making character-driven experiences that are dense with story and dialogue. Online games are already fairly gentle as a rule, so it would be quite a risk for BioWare to break from conventional wisdom and their own strengths as a developer.

There are two competing stories in The Forger, a “crime thriller” – as the internet puts it – that contains a little bit of crime but absolutely no thrills. The first of these stories sees Raymond J. Cutter (John Travolta) get out of prison a few months early in order to be with his son, Will (Tye Sheridan), who has pretty terrible cancer. The second story sees Raymond have to plan and pull off a heist of a painting in order to pay back the person who allowed for his sentence to run out early.

While never my favorite animated Disney film, 1967’s The Jungle Book is nonetheless a pretty enjoyable movie about a kid raised by animals in the jungle. It was based on darker source materials that came in the form of Rudyard Kipling’s writings, and now we’ve got a “live-action” retelling that has been inspired by both, while also bringing a couple of its own ideas into the fold. I put “live-action” in quotation marks because outside of the kid they got to play the lead, nearly everything else in the film is CGI.

HBO’s footage features an older Ellie and Joel living in Jackson, Wyoming, alongside Tommy and his family. Despite the time jump, events from the first season are still relevant, as Joel is opening up about what he did to save Ellie from the Fireflies. However, while the dialogue is ripped straight out of the game, Joel doesn’t appear to have the same scene partner.
